The AME School 1972-1996

Student home room, AME School, Duntroon days, 1972 The AME School was opened on 2nd February 1972 in Canberra, Australia. It was a school conceived by parents to have a progressive philosophy of education centred on the needs of students in a safe and caring environment.

The school closed in 1996. In December 2011 a New Association for Modern Education was incorporated in the ACT by a group of ex-students, teachers and parents. It is reconnecting the AME extended community and organising a series of events in November 2012 to catch up, have fun, reminisce, and explore AME's enduring contribution to progressive education.

On this site you will find information on the school's philosophy and practice, some articles from our ex-staff, students and parents, and listings of resources you might like to check out further. You will also find links to several other progressive schools in Australia and New Zealand.

It is our hope that this dialogue will become fertile soil in the development of a new awareness of and thinking on education in today's society.
